Key Takeaways
- On average, MyFitnessPal members who log their meals at least four days in their first week are 7x more likely to make progress toward their weight loss goals than those who don’t.
- The pattern, which MyFitnessPal calls The First Four, more than doubles the likelihood of a user continuing to be an active logger after one year based on internal data, and its impact on meal-logging consistency holds across every age group in the dataset.
- Members who complete their First Four make up close to a quarter of the platform, yet they drive 64% of all weight loss and nearly 70% of all meal logs.
- To mark the finding, MyFitnessPal is launching an in-app recipe collection called First Four Favorites and a logging challenge in the US and Canada, running September 10 through October 9, 2026.
Twenty years after MyFitnessPal launched, the platform’s data has surfaced a signal that can help predict who succeeds. It isn’t a specific diet, a calorie target, or a workout plan. It’s simply, four days.
A Four-Day Window That Changes the Outcome
On average, members who log their meals at least four days in their first week are 7x more likely to make progress toward their weight loss goals than those who don’t. That early window also more than doubles the likelihood of a user continuing to be an active logger after one year, meaning the difference between a four-day start and a shorter one compounds well past the first week.
The effect strengthens with age. Among users 18 to 24, those who complete their First Four account for 63% of that age group’s total meal logs. That share climbs steadily with every age bracket, reaching 78% among users 55 and older. Early momentum matters for everyone. No matter where you’re starting from, that first week is the tipping point between a habit that fades and one that lasts.
Why Four Days Is Enough
Building a habit doesn’t require a complete overhaul of how someone eats or lives. It requires a short enough runway that the behavior sticks before motivation fades. In a MyFitnessPal survey, 69% of U.S. and 67% of Canadian nutrition app users reported that logging felt automatic within a month. 61% of U.S. and 57% of Canadian MyFitnessPal members surveyed reported noticing changes in energy and mood within 96 hours of consistent logging.
MyFitnessPal’s role is to make the first four days low-friction enough that members can get there, through intuitive logging built for how people actually eat. 64% of surveyed MyFitnessPal users reported preferring to log meals in real time rather than after the fact, and the most commonly logged items among First Four users are staples like whey protein powder, bananas, meal replacement bars, eggs, and high-protein ready-to-drink shakes.
What Consistency Compounds Into
The four-day habit doesn’t stay contained to nutrition. 86% of US and 88% of Canadian nutrition app users report that keeping a logging streak affects their mental health and confidence. Roughly one in four US and Canadian surveyed users also reported that logging helps them stay on track of their food budget, an effect that extends well beyond the original goal that brought them to the platform.
“MyFitnessPal makes food logging simple and intuitive, so just four days of consistent logging can change the trajectory of someone’s progress,” said Melissa Jaeger, RD, LD, Head of Nutrition at MyFitnessPal. “You don’t have to overhaul your diet, routine, or lifestyle overnight. The first four days are about observing your habits, moving beyond calorie counting, and uncovering meaningful patterns that can help guide your next step. The “First Four” Challenge offers both new and existing users the opportunity to build a routine that works for them, with a little friendly competition along the way.”
Built Into the Product
MyFitnessPal is turning the finding into two things members can act on directly. First Four Favorites is a new in-app recipe collection built around the meals that show up most often in successful first weeks. The First Four Challenge asks users in the US and Canada to log at least four days in any 7-day period, from September 10 through October 9, 2026 for a chance to win a year of free groceries, valued at $7,500.* Both are designed to shorten the distance between signing up and hitting the four-day mark that the data shows matters most.
